Last Day of the World

Hey Nerds. I just woke up from a nap and It's a groggy New Year's Eve. Before Christian and I prove ourselves to be irresponsible parents and drag our kid to a bar to meet Kate, here are today's pics:

First one is how I intended the hat to be worn, but the second one shows F's preference.

This was fun to make - orange and pink are super excellent borderline tacky colors together. And pompoms are the veritable bomb.

Fancy New Hat

Weeee! I made a whole hat with the brick stitch, or block stitch, or whatever the $&*##@! it's called. I suppose I should work on my stitch terminology, so I can sound knowledgeable and all.

Do you like purple?

Now, my next venture is to make some hats that you don't have to gather at the top. I think I'm ready to purchase a big girl loom. Adjustable and all. Endless possibilities. Hot freaking damn.

As if that's not cool enough, we received the best present in the whole world for Christmas. Betsey's mom embroidered this picture that little F drew onto fabric. It's magically computer-transferred onto her embroidery machine and besides being the coolest present ever, ever, ever, I want to go out and buy the trillion dollars worth of whatever it takes to conjure up these pieces of wonderfulness. Can't you just see it? Embroidered everything based on your kid's drawings.... your curtains, dish towels, all of your clothes, flags waving proudly right outside of your front door, all of your paper money, socks, the possibilities are endless.

Tasty New Blog

So I was thinking that the world definitely needs a new blog. Definitely. I am going to go about this organically, since I have no sense of structure just yet. Let's base this blog around what I am working on and learning how to make. Thus the name, "Craftwhack". Christian came up with that name. I was going for "Craftzilla", but that one's taken. It makes sense; there's a certain subculture of people who are crafting monsters and cannot control the obsession. You know who you are. Boxes and bags of art and craft materials everywhere. Half-projects everywhere. Lot's of money spent on never touched materials. Eek. It's so fun.

Lately I am obsessed with my Knifty Knitter looms. I bought them at the dreadful Walmart. They were cheap and lured me in with the promise that even I, who couldn't focus on learning to knit, could make a hat in no time. I really grappled with buying them for a while; I was torn. Here's a summary of my thought process during the big event:

"Oh look! Some bright plastic circles! I like circles! Oh, they are looms in a bag. They look like what people who can't knit use to mak
e themselves feel like they can knit. I should really try to learn how to knit again. I really want to learn how to knit. Dammit, why can't I knit? Damnit. Damknit. Okay, I'll buy these things and see what they're all about. Hmmmmmmm..... I have a feeling that people who knit with needles probably look down upon people who use these. Is this cheating? Is this really KNITTING knitting? Do I have to look at everything I make with these as somehow inferior? After all, they're only $12. Oh wait, I don't even make that much per hour at my retail job. Okay, I'll buy these and make tons of cute hats and sell them and make TONS of money. Done."

I immediately became enamored with how quickly and easily you can make a hat with these looms, and they allowed me to ease my way into learning different stitiches, and playing with different yarns and colors. I can't
wait to order my next smaller guage looms, and I can't wait to learn how to knit with actual needles!

Behold the raspberry bobble hat, knitted with too many bobbles. I got a little confused during the pattern and created bobble mania.

Here's a pinkish-red hat with a brim and a pom pom. Pretty straight-forward, all e-wrap.

I loved this yarn; it is all variegated in fall colors and fat and thin-ness. I started three times, unravelled, and finally just e-wrapped it. Then I liked the way it looked inside -out, so I attached the pom pom on that way. So, so zany. I guess little F's taking after her mama here.
